As the virtual reality technologies make their way into mainstream, industry leaders are joining their forces to build new standards, to avoid defragmentation and to help accelerate the adoption of VR technologies.

Industry consortium Khronos Group, who introduced graphics and compute standards like OpenGL and Vulkan in the past, has announced a new initiative to define open standards for virtual reality technologies.

Named as “VR Standards Initiative” the project aims to define a cross-vendor, royalty-free, open standard for access to modern virtual reality devices. The goal is to enable applications to be easily ported to any VR system in the world.

Google, AMD, Oculus, Valve, Razer, ARM Holdings, Intel, NVIDIA, VeriSilicon, Tobii and Sensics are amongst the leading corporations that are supporting this initiative.

More information on this initiative and joining the Khronos Group is available at www.khronos.org/vr

Another recent initiative is the announcement of the Global Virtual Reality Association (GVRA). According to the official statement, the non-profit organization is founded to research and share best practices for the industry, bring together stakeholders, and promote the global adoption of VR.

Google, HTC, Oculus, Samsung, Sony and Acer are amongst the major corporations that started GVRA.

The group aims to benefit consumers, policy makers, and industries interested in the technology.
