The New York Times is launching a 360-degree video stories from around the world on a daily basis.

Named as “The Daily 360” the project is noted as one of the first attempts of daily 360-degree immersive reporting from a major publication.

Times correspondents and photographers around the world will create The Daily 360 reports, which will be run by a team of VR leaders in The Times’s New York newsroom.

Meredith Kopit Levien, executive vice president and chief revenue officer, The New York Times Company says 360 video will be a part of the daily news report, as common as text or interactives.

New York Times is teaming up with Samsung

Samsung will be technology partner of the project. The company will provide Gear 360 cameras and equipment to Times journalists around the world to use while reporting out in the field.

The Daily 360 will be published to Times platforms, including NYTimes.com and its mobile and VR apps, as well as to Samsung VR.

In addition, Samsung will build a special area to experience “The Daily 360” inside the company’s New York flagship store Samsung 837.

Airstrike in Yemen is the first Daily 360 video

The first Daily 360 video offers a rare glimpse inside war-torn Yemen, with footage shot by the Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Tyler Hicks and the reporter Ben Hubbard.

“From Snowfall to The Upshot to The Displaced, the award-winning VR film that blazed the trail in VR journalism, The Times has been the leader in visual digital storytelling,” said Dean Baquet, executive editor, The New York Times in a written statement.

“Virtual reality storytelling isn’t just exciting and immersive, it can forge a lasting and empathetic connection between viewers and subjects,” said Marc Mathieu, chief marketing officer at Samsung Electronics America.

A recent report by The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) argues that the increased use of 360-degree video is a critical first step in virtual reality’s growth into a mainstream marketing channel.

The New York Times and Samsung will mark the launch of The Daily 360 with an event and panel discussion about the future of news, that will feature Times journalists Sam Dolnick, senior editor; Lisa Tobin, executive producer, audio; and Marcelle Hopkins, executive producer, 360 news; moderated by Jake Silverstein, editor in chief, The New York Times Magazine, at “Samsung 837” on Thursday, Nov. 10 in New York City.
