Luxury vehicle brand Jaguar, revealed its first-ever electric car I-PACE via virtual reality headsets.

From two centers in Los Angeles and London, more than 300 guests used HTC VIVE Business Edition headsets, and Dell Precision workstations, to put themselves inside the I-PACE and interact live with other participants.

Ian Callum, Director of Design at Jaguar said virtual reality technology has allowed the company to “share one concept car across the globe in the most immersive way possible.”

The company says I-PACE Concept Vehicle accelerates to 60 mph in around 4 seconds, and features a 90kWh battery with an estimated range of 220 miles. Jaguar confirms the I-PACE production model will be on the road in 2018.

During the VR product launch event, guests ‘sat’ on the concept I-PACE virtual seats, had a 360 degree view of Venice Beach, while the concept car was built piece by piece around them. Groups in LA and London were able to communicate and interact with one another.

To bring the world’s first live cross-continent VR product launch, Jaguar partnered with HTC VIVE, Dell and creative agencies REWIND and Imagination.

“This launch takes the individual far beyond any new car experience they would have witnessed before, allowing people across the world to connect in real time, be fully immersed within the vehicle and share live together their experience,” said Ross Wheeler, Head of Automotive at Imagination.

Jaguar says the I-PACE Concept VR experience will be available through Viveport for HTC Vive headsets.
